About Te Rau Piata

Te Marau Aho Matua is a program that is deeply integrated with Te Marau ō Ngāti Ruanui, a framework that provides a 'Korowai' (cloak) content that embeds the core principles of Te Tino Ūaratanga, Te Ira Tangata, Te Reo, Ngā Iwi, Te Ao and Ahuatanga Ako, which are all complimentary to each other. The program is designed to provide a holistic approach to education that reflects the unique cultural identity and values of Ngāti Ruanui.

At Te Rau Piata, students in Years 7-13 become the leaders, role models, and exemplars of the three worlds. This is where the program becomes more defined and plaited alongside Te Marautanga ō Aotearoa and the New Zealand Curriculum, with a particular focus on Literacy and Numeracy. English and Maths are delivered from the New Zealand Curriculum for L1-3.

In addition to this, there is a strong emphasis on Te Reo Māori o Taranaki, with students learning Karakia, waiata, and mōteatea, among other things. Students also take part in Kapa Haka, which helps them to develop confidence, leadership skills, and a strong sense of cultural identity. Hauora, Hākinakina, Pūtaiao, Tīkanga ā Iwi, and Hītori are also key components of the program, as they help students to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Through the Te Rau Piata program, students are given the opportunity to build upon the foundational knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout their academic career, with a particular focus on developing leadership skills and becoming role models for others. The program empowers students to take ownership of their learning, and to use their knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on their communities and the world at large. By the time they graduate, students are well-equipped to pursue their chosen career paths, while also being well-prepared to be active and engaged members of their communities.
